Reviews

“General performance was quite snappy. We rarely experienced delays when opening various work documents and multimedia files, and we had no problem synchronizing our Outlook e-mail, calendar, and contact information with the device using ActiveSync. Multimedia performance was OK. Songs sounded weak through the device’s speakers, lacking any sort of richness or bass, and turning up the volume only blew out the audio. Fortunately, the Advantage is equipped with a 3.5mm jack, so we were able to plug in a nice pair of headphones and enjoy better-sounding tunes. Videos looked pretty good, except when we switched to full-screen mode, and then the picture became quite pixelated.” (CNET, 2007)

“As always, if you need something between a PDA and a notebook with excellent connectivity, the Advantage is the way to go. It’s instant-on, has much better battery life than a notebook or UMPC, weighs less than a pound and thanks to Opera 9.5, it has a near-desktop web browsing experience. If you already own the first gen Advantage, Windows Mobile 6.1, doubled storage capacity and flash rather than hard disk media are the selling points. But you do lose the front-facing hardware controls which take the fun out of gaming and put more work into scrolling through ebooks. Both keyboards are somewhat awkward, but we give the advantage to the X7510 which provides more tactile and auditory feedback despite the no-travel keys. Should you upgrade if you already own the first gen Advantage? Probably not. But the improvements keep the Advantage viable and attractive to potential new owners.” (MobileTechReview, 2008)
“The HTC Advantage is a device for a niche market so we may not see a Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade release by HTC for the U.S. X7501 model of device. If you decide you want to take some risks then you may want to check out the Athena Project 4 forum at the XDA Developers site, but I am in no way recommending this route for everyone.” (ZDNet, 2008)
